Letter: Americans often stubborn about politics

Monday, Jan. 29, 2007 | 7:27 a.m.

I make sure that I read the letters to the editor of the Las Vegas Sun every morning. I read some letters that praise our president and others that blame the president. Writers of these letters express their freedom of speech, one of the freedoms that is guaranteed by our Constitution.

I believe that the contents of these letters do not sway a reader one way or another. The reader either agrees or disagrees with what the letter has to say. Further, the readers would like to believe that they are right on an issue because others are saying what they think is true.

Perhaps we should not blame a president who has been given faulty intelligence reports; we should blame those who work for him. Perhaps we should all look within and ask ourselves why we distance ourselves from people who do not think like us.

On the Iraq issue, just about everyone would agree that goals are not being achieved because of factions who will not seek a common ground. Are our own strong political beliefs causing our nation to become more like Iraq rather than Iraq becoming more like us?
