Letter: Domestic terrorism deserves attention
Friday, Jan. 19, 2007 | 6:57 a.m.
The events that involved terrorists coming into our country, using our own planes and people to destroy occupied buildings, thereby killing thousands of citizens, deeply saddened me. Our government, rightly so, declared war on this foreign terrorist element.
However, in addition to addressing these wrongs, America needs to look within and also declare war on internal terrorists who have battered people of color for centuries, such as the Ku Klux Klan. Think of the many citizens of color who have been killed or terrorized in the last century: Dr. Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers, the four little girls bombed in a church in Alabama, all of the hangings, whippings, draggings and shootings that have occurred within our borders.
America tends to turn a somewhat deaf ear to this terror of people of color. Too often they wring their hands and say, "Isn't it awful," but so far, not enough has been done to make it stop! Wake up America, and let us address our own internal problems, too. Terror must stop everywhere!
