John Katsilometes takes a trip through the Beatles Revolution Lounge and notes the music is not always that of the Fab Four

Friday, Jan. 19, 2007 | 6:55 a.m.

What would George and John have thought?

On Tuesday night I stopped at a media reception for the Beatles Revolution Lounge at the Mirage, the new ultralounge inspired by the Beatles and created by Cirque du Soleil in partnership with nightclub design company Ink of Toronto. As advertised, the innovative design evokes the psychedelia of the Beatles in the late '60s, particularly the light-and-shadow patterns behind the main bar and the interactive VIP tables, which are equipped with infrared technology that allows guests to create tabletop artwork and have that work "thrown" onto a set of video columns placed in the middle of the club.

But I was struck by the absence of any actual music by the Beatles. For more than an hour we heard a long dance track ("anonymous disco" is one term used to describe the hypnotically seamless sound) mashed with the likes of Santana, Sting and many others. But I heard nothing from the band that inspired, and officially endorses, the club's design.

The explanation is that the soundscape morphs from a mix of Beatles music (played nightly from 6 to 10) to pop- and rock-driven dance mixes as the night progresses (until the 4 a.m. closing time). The Abbey Road Bar, which sits at the lounge entrance, plays Beatles music from noon to 10 p.m. For the Tuesday night event - held during "Beatle Time" - we were hearing the more broad spectrum of music rather than merely Beatles songs. Still, I quote from "Penny Lane," "very strange."

"Dude! Get away from me with those clippers!" The Las Vegas contestants in Bravo's "Top Chef" survived Wednesday's competition and (in the case of Marcel Vigneron) a failed attempt at unauthorized hair-grooming. Vigneron, who works at Joel Robuchon at MGM Grand, and Elia Aboumrad of The Hotel at Mandalay Place join Ilan Hall and Sam Talbot (both of New York City) in Wednesday's two-hour finale. In this week's episode the five remaining contestants got a little goofy, prompting Aboumrad to shave her wavy brunette locks. Hall followed, and the burly Cliff Crooks attempted to pin down the far smaller Vigneron to shave his lengthy mane, too. A none-to-amused Tom Colicchio learned of this flagrant violation of contest rules and gave a genuinely stunned (and contrite) Crooks his to-go orders ...

Gratuity not included: Boa Steakhouse at the Forum Shops at Caesars has launched (we mean, is now offering) a new drink called King Richard's Pride. The beverage costs $1,000 (for some of us, it would be even more costly than that, but I digress). The cocktail consists of two ounces of Hennessy Richard, three-quarters of an ounce of Dom Perignon Rose 1996, and a half-ounce of Chambord Liqueur Royale de France, all blended with juice from a half of a lime, one muddled orange slice and a splash of cranberry juice. The grand drink is served in a Baccarat crystal "Equinoxe" cocktail glass ...

The exhibits "Bodies" and "Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition" at Tropicana are still showing signs of life. The attractions, which many observers considered mere curiosities when they opened, have been extended through Memorial Day ...

Following up on the Orleans Arena sighting from last Friday, when we spotted KKLZ 96.3-FM DJ Dennis Mitchell wearing a Wranglers jersey bearing No. 78. The reason for No. 78? Dennis and his wife, Suzan, were married in 1978. "It looks like she's the one," Mitchell confides ...

Vegas moment: As I waited in the Bellagio valet area recently, I spotted a woman pulling her 2-year-old daughter (who appeared quite content) in a shiny red Radio Flyer wagon with wooden side panels. The mother explained that she was a Vegas resident and, "I know how much walking you can do in here," she said of the hotel. She added that it was not the first time she had given her daughter a lift through the Bellagio and has never been told not to ...

Great passer: A colleague dishes the plate LBIRD33, spotted on a white Toyota Camry. The plate's Beantown-themed frame read, "New England" at the top, "Patriots" at the bottom.
