Letter: The sky did fall after we left Vietnam

Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2007 | 7:01 a.m.

In Tuesday's Las Vegas Sun, letter writer Virgil A. Sestini wrote, "We are admonished that if we fail to win in Iraq, the sky will fall, and disaster will be our eventual fate. Similar rhetoric about a communist takeover domino effect of Southeast Asia was continually drummed during the Vietnam War."

Sestini's argument is from the perspective of one who comfortably lives here in the United States. What if he lived in Iraq?

I wonder if the families and loved ones of the 1 million people slaughtered in Cambodia after United States forces left Southeast Asia, and the hundreds of thousands of people imprisoned, tortured and killed in Vietnam after our troops left there, would agree that the sky did not fall.
