Letter: Change of leadership is best for America
Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2007 | 7:02 a.m.
Lee S. Gliddon Jr., in his Jan. 6 letter, "Democrats took little time to show colors," accuses Democrats of talking bipartisanship and then breaking ranks by trying to change the "status quo" created by Republicans on issues like raising the minimum wage and attempting to change the terribly flawed and failed prosecution of the Iraq war. Remember, Mr. Gliddon is the same individual who in a letter a few weeks ago suggested that we should all give thanks to Donald Rumsfeld for the "splendid" job that he did as defense secretary.
Where does Mr. Gliddon get off by stating that raising the minimum wage will not benefit many? This is simply not true, in that raising the minimum wage will benefit many families struggling to provide for their own and to avoid falling below the poverty line.
Likewise, Mr. Gliddon apparently advocates no change to the failed prosecution of the Iraq war, in which the Bush administration is too incompetent and too arrogant to admit its mistakes and failures and commence a redeployment of our troops from Iraq.
Finally, Mr. Gliddon argues that the Democrats will do and say anything to get re-elected. This is a statement in defense of the Republican Party, which for purely political reasons did not dismiss Rumsfeld until the day after the midterm elections and which did not blow the whistle on its own Congressman Mark Foley for his abuse of pages in hopes that Mr. Foley would be re-elected and the Republicans would retain control of Congress. Unlike Mr. Gliddon, I believe it's time for a change - change that will improve the quality of life for all Americans, including our troops in Iraq. Enough said.
