Letter: Bloomberg would do Republicans proud
Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007 | 7:34 a.m.
Although I'm a Democrat, I want the best candidates from both parties to run for the presidency. In 2000 I was rooting for Sen. John McCain, and probably most Americans wish that he had won.
Now as 2008 approaches, and we look over the field of candidates for the Republican nomination, there is none so far that doesn't have some flaws. Sen. McCain will be 72 in 2008, Sen. Sam Brownback is too conservative, and Gov. Mitt Romney has flip-flopped on issues near and dear to the Christian right.
So I would like to suggest the mayor of New York. No, not Rudy Giuliani, who has had a stormy personal life, but Republican Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg. Mayor Bloomberg is a very successful businessman and is so popular with New Yorkers in that Democratic city that he won re-election by a margin of 20 percent in 2005. He is a hard-working, sensible leader who would bring order to the White House.
Let's hope that Republicans do not take the easy road and nominate somebody who is beholden to the wheelers and dealers, but that they instead consider Mayor Bloomberg, who would be a president for all Americans.
