As much as I have been writing and thinking about the Nevada presidential caucus making the state a player, it didn't really hit me until last week in Carson City. A dapper Joe Biden strolling into Comma Coffee, right across from the Legislative Building. Legislators fawning over Hillary Clinton inside the building. A gaggle of recognizable national media folk pecking away at their keyboards at the community center. Satellite trucks in the parking lot. Protesters performing for the cameras. Widespread use of such pesticides as DDT caused the nation's bald eagle population to dwindle to a mere 500 breeding pairs by 1960. The bird has been listed as an endangered species since 1978. Because of this protection, the bald eagle population has grown to almost 7,100 breeding pairs. And the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service has until the end of June to decide whether that comeback warrants removing the bird's endangered status - a move that is likely to happen.

With apologies to its bigger, glitzier neighbor to the south, North Las Vegas might want to think about a new civic slogan: "What happens there can stay there."
