Letter: Too much focus on what goes wrong here
Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007 | 6:54 a.m.
Please allow me to preface this letter by stating that I am, generally speaking, a fan of the Las Vegas Sun. As a rule, while I do not agree with all of your viewpoints, I think you are reasonable and fair with your editorial prose.
As a nearly lifelong citizen of Las Vegas, and one who has proudly raised my family here, I take abhorrent exception, however, to the views expressed by columnist Jon Ralston on Feb. 16, in which he makes the comparison of our current city to that referred to by Gilman Ostrander some 40 years ago as the "Great Rotten Borough." His barrage continued with attacks and insulting references to several of our elected officials, particularly our newly elected governor.
I most certainly do not always agree with the choices made by some of our elected officials, just as I do not always agree with the views expressed by journalists. Nevada has had its share of problems through the years, just as have many other cities and states, but we get through them as a community. We may not be perfect, but we have not earned our position as a world-class destination resort city because of all the mistakes we have made, but by what we have done right. Mr. Ralston might do well to try, on occasion, to see the glass as half full.
I find Mr. Ralston's continued, seemingly constant, dissatisfaction with our city and, perhaps, state as a whole, insulting and demeaning to its citizens. Perhaps, if he finds our state so distasteful and repugnant, he should consider finding somewhere else to live. Maybe he can find another state where the people would not be offended that he seems to use the power of his pen to be judge, jury and executioner.
