Letter: Put global warming into perspective
Mars, a planet near Earth, has no humans, no Republicans, and certainly no President Bush, yet global warming is occurring there. NASA, New Science and other magazines have reported on the shrinking ice caps on Mars repeatedly.
A tale told by their e-mails
CARSON CITY - It's always the e-mails.
Editorial: More distraction for Gibbons
Now, as governor, serious allegations are still coming and it appears his will be an administration plagued with controversy that could well damage his ability to forge an agenda.
THE OZ PRINCIPLE
It might seem that a cowardly lion, heartless tin woodman and brainless scarecrow have nothing to do with hospital management.
Letter: President should reflect will of people
I also agree with her quote of the late Molly Ivins that, "We are the people who run the country. We are the deciders."
Editorial: Big league dreams
That is because of NBA Commissioner David Stern's remarks Wednesday. His hard-line stance against legalized sports betting, which would rule out Nevada, has softened. Stern now says he welcomes a proposal from Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman on putting a team here.
John Katsilometes meets a man who met Sammy Davis Jr. 67 years ago and showed up to honor the legend Thursday
Miller met Davis, who was then a member of the Will Mastin Trio, in Harlem in 1940. Miller was a member of a jazz outfit called the Three Chords, and the acts toured the vaudeville circuit for several years. But the Three Chords were never more than a support act, while Davis ascended to worldwide stardom. In 1960, Miller and Davis parted ways.
Editorial: Protecting the unwanted
According to a story by the Las Vegas Sun on Thursday, shelter workers routinely crowded dogs and cats into cages in an effort to save as many of them as possible.
Letter: Bush determined to pass along failed policy
The continuation of this arrogant policy makes a few things quite clear.
CONVENTION CRASHING: MAGIC INTERNATIONAL
For three hours on Tuesday, without knowing it, I walked around the Las Vegas Convention Center with a rip in my pants. It was about eight inches long and strategically located.
Up North, a game of mistaken identity
CARSON CITY - A lobbyist who has worked the Nevada Legislature for years, nay, decades, was testifying at a hearing this week when he referred to Assemblyman William Horne as "Wendell," by which he meant Wendell Williams, who hasn't served in the Legislature since 2003.
News of FBI probe hits along party lines
The man who preceded Gov. Jim Gibbons in office said Thursday that if he were still governor, he would be greatly distracted by an FBI investigation into his conduct as a public official.
Jon Ralston on how Nevada's reputation as the Great Rotten Borough is being reaffirmed
The Great Rotten Borough, the Nevada envisioned more than 40 years ago by Gilman Ostrander, must seem pretty rotten today to local and national newspaper readers. The G-Sting hangover persists with the sentencing of Lance Malone. But doing favors for a strip club boss, while sickeningly scandalous, somehow seems mild compared to Jim Gibbons being looked at by the feds for accepting gifts and money from a contractor - a pal named Warren Trepp whom the former congressman is accused of trying to help feed at the near-bottomless federal trough.
FLASHPOINT for Feb 16, 2007
Remember all those politicians who took heat for going to the big NASCAR event and partying in the owner's suite? This year the invitation has this paragraph: "For those of you who are elected officials, we are sensitive to the issues of lobbying and the reporting of the cost of entertainment. While our invitation is not an attempt to lobby you in any way, we want to be consistent with the spirit of the guidelines that determine Nevada's lobbying regulations. We encourage you to join us, and please take note that you should value any day in Mr. (Bruton) Smith's ...
Organ music to provide background for fundraiser

Ron Kantowski on how Nevadans care more about basketball than NIAA's residency rules for players
Knowing this, and how much Grambling or Florida A&M charges for out-of-state tuition, I might consider pulling my tuba-playing son out of the local high school and enrolling him across town at John Philip Sousa Vocational.
Horror and fascination
Who: Michael Light
Colombian driver good for NASCAR
