Letter: Plan to leave Iraq filled with common sense

I commend the Las Vegas Sun in doing an excellent job of daily coverage by its reports, editorials, letters to the editor and also in commentary on the most important ongoing tragic event at this time: the war in Iraq.

On Feb. 14 I read the commentary by columnist Nicholas Kristof ("It's time for a different kind of surge - of diplomacy") and found it to contain such common sense and pragmatism about what can and should be done to end the war in Iraq.

It is well known that the vast majority of Iraqis would feel safer if U.S. forces left Iraq, and our continued presence there exacerbates and impedes a political settlement by the Iraqis for the good of their country and their people. I agree totally with Kristof's recommendation to announce a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. troops and to begin a diplomatic "surge" to bring peace to this troubled country and to ours.
