Letter: Smoking soldiers set bad example for kids

The passage of the recent Clean Air Act was long past due. However, it stops far short of what yet must be done.

Recently I saw several broadcast reports on TV news of our troops fighting battles, firing guns with cigarettes dangling from their mouths. This to me is deplorable.

Our youths look up to role models. Baseball, football and basketball players would not be allowed to smoke in uniform in the field while working. Why then is it OK in the military?

It not only sends a poor message to our children but also secondhand smoke will kill the Iraqi children as surely as bullets. The smoking GIs need to be sent to rehab or discharged.
