Letter: Libertarian streak is hurting Nevada
Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007 | 12:39 p.m.
Letter writer Bill Miller wants to attract high-tech financial and medical research companies to Nevada to diversify our economy. ("Las Vegas area needs diverse economy," Friday) This is not a new problem. Nevada is a libertarian state. We do not tax. Without taxes, we cannot build the educational institutions or civic infrastructure needed to attract educated professionals, nor can we provide them with a qualified workforce.
We have collectively chosen this path and should learn to live with it. Too bad, though, for our young people who grow up in this environment and often end up with careers in unchallenging, routine jobs in smoky casinos on the Strip rather than being exposed to the diverse and satisfying cultural, educational and professional opportunities available to the youth of more progressive states.
