Letter: Big spender Bush suddenly a budget miser
He claims Congress spends too much. He's right, and if it had saved just a few of our tax dollars maybe it could have bought Mr. Bush a nice veto pen that actually worked. Now that the Democrats have some control over the Congress he's finally got enough money to buy a pen. What irony!
TAKE FIVE: PIONEER LAS VEGAS BOWL
Saturday's 16th edition of the Pioneer Las Vegas Bowl brought something to Sam Boyd Stadium that largely is missing during the three months UNLV is occupying the building: an air of big-time college football.
SIGHT UNSEEN: Our favorite photos that didn't run this year
Las Vegas is the city of events - weddings, conventions, award banquets, board meetings, sporting contests, beauty contests, galas, reunions, hearings and debates.
Editorial: Making timely donations
For example, when thieves stole six bags of Christmas toys destined for Shriners Hospital for Children in Salt Lake City this month, the community responded by sending money and toys that more than replaced what had been taken.
Editorial: Setting no standard
California's request, made in 2005, asked for a waiver from the EPA that would have allowed the state to move forward with emissions standards that are more strict than federal standards.
Editorial: Can you hear me now?
Air France announced last week that making in-flight phone calls might be the next logical step.
HIGH-TECH ROAD SHOW
There was a time when car buyers factored in price, safety, reliability, fuel economy and comfort.
LOOKING IN ON: GAMING
Bars across the country have attempted to capitalize on the poker craze by offering free poker tournaments where winners can earn bragging rights, cash prizes and even entries to big casino tournaments.
Harrah's can chase high rollers or stay midmarket
With new Strip resorts competing for the high-end market, the world's largest gaming company is faced with a momentous decision: whether to join the chase or do what it does best - cultivate middle-class gamblers who prefer frequent casino incentives over opulent surroundings.
We didn't mean what we wrote, School District says
Tucked into the Clark County School District's new in-house report card is a list of potential postgraduation goals for students. By 2009, the district wants to increase the percentage of students enrolling in four-year colleges and universities, as well as those signing up for two-year programs and those entering the workforce.
Letter: Looking back on 'anti-alien' hysteria
As a grad student at UNLV in the '70s, I researched the effects of "anti-alien" hysteria after World War I when the Nevada Legislature enacted laws to promote "Americanism" in our state.
WEEK IN REVIEW: CLARK COUNTY
Out-of-towners inevitably ask the question when you pick them up at McCarran International Airport.
LOOKING IN ON: CITY HALL
David Hickey, winner of a MacArthur Foundation "genius grant," and Las Vegas' very own world-renowned arts critic, threw out a thought last week that "intellectual capital, artistic capital is real capital."
Letter: Smoking ban hurts business, is unfair
Before the holiday season many of the established and well-known eateries that had to comply with the outlandish smoking ban experienced a revenue loss of up to 50 percent, so I can imagine how much more these same businesses will lose over the Christmas and New Year's holiday as the crush of visitors comes to town.
