Letter: Top higher ed officials put themselves first

Saturday, Dec. 22, 2007 | 7:30 a.m.

Regarding the Las Vegas Sun's Friday article "Schools cut, leaders collect big paychecks":

From this excellent, informative article it is very apparent that Nevada's institutions of higher learning are doing at least one thing extremely well - paying their top bureaucrats.

As the article points out, the top salaries in the Nevada System of Higher Education exceed those in state and local governments. It is interesting to note that the $90,000 offered to the UNLV president in the 1980s, adjusted for inflation, would be $229,560 in 2007 - a far cry from the current UNLV president's pay of $432,946.

Surely there are those who will justify the current pay based on UNLV's growth. I am glad some on the Board of Regents are concerned - however, it is doubtful anything will be done.
