Letter: What Nevada needs is a state lottery
Friday, Dec. 21, 2007 | 7:22 a.m.
Someone needs to ask Gov. Jim Gibbons why he is not pushing for a state lottery.
The majority of people in this state would support a lottery.
But previously the casino lobbyists have blocked proposals for a lottery when they have come up in the Nevada Legislature.
The people of Nevada need the $200 million to $300 million that a lottery would bring in, and it might even bring in more since this is a gamblers' state. Any amount would help the budget now.
A lottery, once passed, could be started in six months if they wanted to do it. If not, let's raise the lowest gaming tax in the world to balance the budget.
