Letter: Casinos should give back to community
Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2007 | 7:01 a.m.
I read recently that a high-ranking casino executive said Nevada would be ruined if taxes were raised on casino profits. Those poor casino executives. They have hundreds of millions of dollars to spend in other parts of the world, where taxes are much higher, but do not wish to give back to our communities here in Nevada.
We are already on our way to ruin if our education doesn't improve. A third of our teens are not graduating from high school. Gridlock on our roads is becoming unbearable. We have homeless and hungry people living on our streets. Our child welfare programs can barely cope. On average, someone is murdered every other day in Clark County.
Can it get any worse?
Of course it can, while casinos profit and our needs as a community continue to suffer. Face it: Casinos in Nevada have a sweeter deal than anywhere else in the world. Instead of whining, they could make this state a proud place by recognizing they have a part in giving back to the community.
