Letter: No cell? Demise of pay phones will hurt
Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2007 | 6:58 a.m.
Regarding AT&T's announcement that it is getting out of the pay phone business:
I think telephone companies doing away with all pay telephones is dangerous. Not everyone has a cell phone, including those who can't afford it, those who don't need it and those whose battery needs to be charged.
So in an unexpected situation or emergency, when not at home, people without cells are often reduced to hopefully borrowing a stranger's cell because they cannot find a public pay phone. I think this practice is wrong and should be revised so as to leave pay phones at a few locations.
