Letter: Don’t fool us twice with amnesty
Friday, Dec. 7, 2007 | 7:29 a.m.
I would like to know where letter writer Amy Thomason ("U.S. should build bridges, not walls," Wednesday) got the rose-colored glasses through which she views the world. In her opening paragraph, she uses quotes around the word illegal to make it look like a label someone just made up out of thin air. They are still illegal immigrants.
While employing platitudes such as "Do unto others ..." she should remember another: "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me."
We already went through the whole amnesty thing once because, we were told, it involved only a few thousand and once they received amnesty, we wouldn't have to worry about the illegal immigrant situation again. That was then.
Today we are looking at exactly the same situation, but on a much larger scale. What will happen in another 15 to 20 years, when the numbers will be even larger than they are today? Fool us twice? Which leads to: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."
Do we want to keep on cycling through this same debate, or do we want to enforce the rule of law, one of the cornerstones of civilization?
