Letter: Cameras are no substitute for officers

Monday, Dec. 3, 2007 | 7:14 a.m.

I think the camera that Metro Police has on Fremont Street is the not the real answer to crime prevention and control. The use of cameras only moves crime to other corners, streets and areas. And, for that matter, cameras don't necessarily stop a criminal who doesn't care either way.

There is also the issue of privacy of innocent people, even though some may say there is no privacy in public areas. The best way to fight to crime is still having officers on the streets. I always say there is no substitute for an actual officer on the street patrolling.

Cameras should never, and hopefully will never, replace the officer on patrol.
