Letter: Those who pay the bills have right to search
Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007 | 1:15 a.m.
An editorial in Wednesday's Las Vegas Sun - "Open up, or go hungry: Supreme Court should have ruled on policy of searching homes of welfare applicants" - is flawed in one sense.
I believe in constitutional limits on the government. However, my children's room can be searched by me any time, because I own the room and pay the bills. These welfare recipients are not paying their own way; we the taxpayers are.
Therefore we the taxpayers, through our representatives in government, have the right to search what we are paying for and make sure it is all being used legally. If they are violating the law, they have the protection of saying no, but our paying the bill ends at that point.
I can't believe the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals made this ruling, but congratulations to them and the Supreme Court for protecting society and not the criminal on this issue.
