Defense Dept.: 364 Afghan-Area Deaths

As of Thursday, Aug. 30, 2007, at least 364 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Uzbekistan as a result of the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to the Defense Department. The department last updated its figures Aug. 28, 2007.

Of those, the military reports 239 were killed by hostile action.

Outside the Afghan region, the Defense Department reports 63 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, two were the result of hostile action. The military lists these other locations as Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba; Djibouti; Eritrea; Jordan; Kenya; Kyrgyzstan; Philippines; Seychelles; Sudan; Tajikistan; Turkey and Yemen.

There were also four CIA officer deaths and one military civilian death.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

Three soldiers died Monday at Forward Operating Base Naray, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered when insurgents attacked their unit during combat operations in Jalalabad. Killed were:

- Army Maj. Henry S. Ofeciar, 37, Agana, Guam.; assigned 1st Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Riley, Kan.

- Army Master Sgt. Scott R. Ball, 38, Mount Holly Springs, Pa.; assigned to the 55th Brigade, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Scranton, Pa.

- Army Sgt. Jan M. Argonish, 26, Peckville, Pa.; assigned to the 55th Brigade, Pennsylvania Army National Guard, Scranton, Pa.

Three soldiers died Tuesday in Jaji, Afghanistan, from wounds suffered from an explosive. Killed were:

- Army Sgt. 1st Class Rocky H. Herrera, 43, Salt Lake City; assigned to the 585th Engineer Pipeline Company, 864th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, Fort Lewis, Wash.

- Army Sgt. Cory L. Clark, 25, Plant City, Fla.; assigned to the 585th Engineer Pipeline Company, 864th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, Fort Lewis, Wash.

- Army Sgt. Bryce D. Howard, 24, Vancouver, Wash.; assigned to Headquarters Support Company, 864th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, Fort Lewis, Wash.
