Letter: It is getting too expensive to live here
Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007 | 7:15 a.m.
I'm 63 years old and we moved here from New York five years ago with hope of achieving a better lifestyle for less money. We've found the promise of a lower cost of living to be a myth because of fees and escalating costs.
Among the expenses that are far more costly than in New York are car insurance, car registration, water, electricity and gasoline.
If you own a business , you must pay thousands of dollars every year to renew your licenses, and you must have state, local and business-specific licenses. This doesn't occur in most other states.
Additionally, onerous provisions are put into regulations so that you are spending money and time for audit fees, CPA fees, resident-agent fees and you name it.
The lack of a state income tax is more than made up for with all the fees. I'm retired from Verizon and gradually we are being priced out of Nevada. This should be a warning to our Legislature about their myriad fees and to those who continue to grant utility rate increases without requiring the utilities to instead increase efficiencies.
