Letter: Disabled people already protected
Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007 | 7:15 a.m.
I was puzzled during one of the recent Democratic presidential debates when a question was posed by a member of the audience. This gentleman and his wife were disabled , and he had retired from a company that later went bankrupt. As a result, he suffered a reduction in his pension and lost his health insurance.
Why is this disabled person (and the public) unaware that our current system provides that disabled people, regardless of age, start receiving early Social Security benefits?
Further, two years after they are eligible for Social Security benefits, they are also eligible for Medicare.
We certainly need universal health care, but permanently disabled people are already provided for under current law.
