Letter: Making the case for finesse, not brutality

Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007 | 1:15 a.m.

The use of protective headgear should be required for professional boxers, as is required in the Olympics and Golden Gloves, and every other sport where head injuries may be encountered.

While not offering complete protection, headgear would reduce the impact of a head blow and also help reduce the number of head shots since a killer knockout would be less likely.

Another consideration would be to not count head shots in awarding points for the match. A match based on skill and finesse in place of brute force would still be worth watching.
