Letter: Key to universal care rests with Congress

Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007 | 7:17 a.m.

Regarding Samantha Galing Gaddy's July 29 commentary, "Health care reform is top issue in America this election cycle":

I applaud the efforts of Ms. Gaddy, director of Nevada for Health Care, to bring universal health care to Nevadans, as well as to all Americans. But I think that the first approach for her group should be not to the presidential candidates, but to seek congressional candidates who will support her group's views. Congress is where the real battle will be.

The medical establishment and the pharmaceutical and insurance companies are implacable foes of universal health care, and will use every resource to defeat such a measure. Although the Democratic candidates for president, as well as one or two of the Republican candidates , will support such a measure, they can't act unless it gets passed in Congress.

Don't count on Fred Thompson, though. He recently told an audience that the poorest American gets better health care than British or Canadian citizens. Start with congressional candidates, then you will have a chance to provide Americans with this necessary care.
