Letter: Sick society breeds sick individuals
Sunday, April 22, 2007 | 7:15 a.m.
Here we go again. Another very sick individual kills innocent people. News flash: A sick society breeds sick people. Look around you, folks. Are you happy living in a sick society?
In my middle-class neighborhood lives a young homeless man. He walks the area rummaging through trash containers. He talks to himself and pounds his head occasionally as he walks in a world of his own.
If he found a weapon in the trash would he use it? Would you stand next to him to find out?
Many of you want to blame the weapons the sick people use to kill. Please blame the trigger finger that takes orders from the brain.
From early on, young children are bombarded from the media with violence. Violence is a sickness we can't seem to cure. Don't blame a piece of metal and plastic and gunpowder, and the person who sells weapons.
If you have to blame anyone, blame yourself for not trying to make this sick society well. It all starts with the person you see every day in the mirror. Demand an end to street gangs, illegal drugs and greed that leads to senseless wars. That would be a good start.
In the meantime be prepared for a lot more of the same. There's an old saying: You ain't seen nothing yet.
