John Katsilometes relates a war story from a decorated WWII vet known to most of us as a venerable comedian

Thursday, April 19, 2007 | 6:57 a.m.

Long before he grew his mane wild, Marty Allen sported a crew cut. And long before he told jokes, he helped prevent a war tragedy.

Not widely known is that the recent Gold Coast headliner, who just started a series of dates with his wife, Karon Kate Blackwell, is a decorated veteran of World War II. Allen, still punching away at age 85, possesses a Soldier's Medal for bravery for helping stop a fire that threatened a B-24 heavily loaded with bombs. The incident occurred in 1944, when Allen was stationed with the 15th Air Force in Foggia, Italy. He was a member of the ground crew loading a B-24 for a bombing raid on the Romanian oil fields of Ploietsi, a 1943-44 campaign that crimped Adolf Hitler's last supply of oil in the region.

As a fuel truck backed toward the plane, sparks flew from a small motor used as a gas pump at the rear of the vehicle. Two men holding the fuel hose fled as the truck caught fire and threatened to turn the plane into a giant explosive. But our man Marty did not cower, leaping into the truck and driving it a safe distance from the B-24. Then he rushed to the plane and put out a small fire threatening the payload (Allen's memory of just how he put the fire out is somewhat dim, but he surmises that he used his jacket).

An Air Force investigation of the matter concluded that Allen's actions probably prevented a horrific incident and he received the Soldier's Medal, the military's highest honor for noncombat heroism.

But Allen says the real danger awaited him in his hometown of Pittsburgh.

"My mother told me, 'I didn't send you to the war to do that!' " Allen said Wednesday afternoon. "The thought of her mad at me was more frightening than anything I saw in Italy."

The widespread theory that something dramatic and possibly violent unfolds in the Nevada desert during the final season of "The Sopranos" is bolstered by the recent activity at Bootleg Canyon, the mountain bike park in Boulder City. A production crew for the show has been spotted scouting locations around the canyon, which might mean there could be some foul play happening out there. Or, the crew is just looking for a great view of the Strip ...

"Tony n' Tina's Wedding" co-producer Raphael Berko checked in Monday morning to clarify that he has nothing to do with "Birdy's Bachelorette Party," the interactive production that opened Saturday night at Polly Esther's at the Stratosphere. I erred Monday when I wrote that the two shows shared producers. They don't. But they do share a bit of DNA.

Mark Nassar, one of the co-creators of "Tony's" in New York, also created the New York version of "Birdy." Joining the Las Vegas production is Denise Fennell, who played Tina in the New York version of "Tony n' Tina's" and is a co-creator of "Birdy's" in Las Vegas. The third member of the show's writing team, Suzanna Melendez, actually met her husband, the immortal Stuttering John Melendez, during a "Tony n' Tina's" performance in New York. The two productions differ greatly in their pedigree. "Tony n' Tina's" is still doing brisk business after five years in Las Vegas. "Birdy's," a far more raunchy romp, needs, "a couple of weeks to work out the kinks," Nassar says ...

Signs of the times: Still hanging from the nightclub Ice on Harmon Avenue and Koval Lane are three banners trumpeting NBA All-Star Weekend parties hosted by LeBron James and Allen Iverson. Unless someone acts soon these are either going to be stolen or blown off the building ...

Just before Tuesday's media performance of "Stomp Out Loud," Jeff Beacher (somewhat slimmer after dropping 40 pounds) said he had no plans to replace Bernie Barker in the upcoming "Beacher's Madhouse" at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel. Barker, a featured performer in the old "Madhouse" and billed as the world's oldest professional stripper, died of cancer last month at age 66: "There was only one Bernie. He's irreplaceable," said Beacher, who is still using a promotional shot that shows Barker at the far left in a group shot for "Beacher's Unprofessional Bowling Association" at Lucky Strike at the Rio. Beacher explains that it is too expensive to update the shot. ...

It's a Circus: An update on the new club at Circus Circus, Luna y Sol, which we mentioned in Monday's column. By day, the space is actually the Mexican/Italian restaurant Mexitalia (where the gnocchi tacos are to die for). The restaurant morphs into a nightclub on Friday and Saturday nights. Also at Circus Circus is one of the more egregious titles of anything in the city, the Green Zone, which is the unfortunate name of the area where those under age 21 are allowed to convene. ...

The champion of the current Nevada Public Radio pledge drive is Restaurant Guy Savoy General Manager Franck Savoy, who has offered a total of $10,000 in dining certificates to his father's swanky namesake restaurant at Caesars Palace. The drive lasts until the station raises $335,000 ...
