Letter: Point missed on reason for Iraq war
Tuesday, April 17, 2007 | 7:04 a.m.
F. Jay Harrell's April 14 letter - stating that Sen. Harry Reid and most Democrats, plus 70 percent of Americans, want to see an end with honor to the Iraq fiasco before our troops "complete their mission" - totally misses the point that the "mission'" was to rid Saddam Hussein of possible weapons of mass destruction. None was found, and Bush pompously declared "Mission Accomplished."
Then Bush changed the "mission" to democracy for Iraq. How many "missions" are our soldiers required to accomplish? Let's face it, this war was started for imperial control of Iraq's oil. That is the true so-called mission. Our soldiers are fundamentally fighting and dying for control of a commodity!
The only good that may come out of this Iraq mess is that our future leaders will have learned a lesson to think twice before an unnecessary war. But that's what many Americans, including Vietnam vets, said about that war also.
