Letter: Let truants learn real lessons of life
Tuesday, April 17, 2007 | 7:04 a.m.
After reading the Sun's April 8 story, "Hot on kids' tracks," I am proposing a simple solution. Eliminate the truant officers, also known as "kiddie cops," and use those resources for the students who want to learn. If the punks don't want to go to school, do not waste any precious resources on them. This is how we penalize them.
When these dropouts try to feed on the welfare system, they will be denied unless they have proven their worth to society by earning a high school diploma. Once the gravy train is eliminated, we will have fuller classrooms of learners. Let them catch themselves.
