Letter: Thankfully, we have some diplomatic leaders
Sunday, April 15, 2007 | 7:26 a.m.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a group of other representatives from the House recently traveled to a number of Middle Eastern countries, including Syria. While there, they engaged in conversations with the leaders of those countries. No foreign policy was set, no commitments were made, only ideas were exchanged.
Perhaps this interaction gave congressional leaders some insight into the complexities of Middle Eastern politics. Perhaps it gave the leaders of Middle Eastern nations a more rounded view of America's leadership.
There is no question that America's foreign policy is determined by the president, but the current president is stubbornly unwilling to even consider trying to understand the viewpoints of others. He is very much "my way or the highway" in his aggressive approach to diplomacy, both with Congress and with leaders of countries.
Thank goodness America has some leaders who are willing to interact with the major players in the Middle East and perhaps eventually lead us to a solution for this mess we're in.
