Letter: Bringing our troops home - with honor
Wednesday, April 11, 2007 | 7:33 a.m.
Jo Ann Soden's April 9 letter, headlined "Reid has shamed his constituency," hit the nail on the head when she wrote that "actions speak louder than words." That's about the only thing in her letter, however, that makes any sense.
As the leader of the majority party in the U.S. Senate, Sen. Harry Reid is attempting to see closure to the never-ending war in Iraq and provide for the safety of our troops as we bring the troops home in a timely withdrawal with honor. It's interesting that the writer, Ms. Soden, takes issue with the pork that has been added to the military support bill, but does not mention the fact that President Bush has signed hundreds of bills into law over the past six years that were "dripping wet with pork." For the most part, those bills were laden heavy with Republican pork.
For those who have lived in Nevada for as long as I have, it's not hard to look on the tenure of Sen. Reid in Washington as a job well done. The Searchlight native has a long and competent record of not only supporting our military, but also doing a great job of representing Nevada and Nevada's interests in Washington.
The Democrats in Congress are walking a very thin and precarious line as they attempt to bring closure to a war that should never have been, and yet support our troops who are fighting there. In closing, I would like to simply say thank you to Sen. Reid for the job that he does, and for him to keep up the good work by bringing the troops home.
