Letter: An emphatic no vote to guns in classrooms
Tuesday, April 10, 2007 | 7:17 a.m.
I have been following the Nevada Legislature as closely as is possible for me to do so during this current session.
A number of proposals and bills are good ones that are beneficial to Nevadans, some of which are largely overdue. I have particularly been interested in the proposals of state Sen. Bob Beers. Many of his proposals are worthy of consideration and deserve attention.
However, his proposal to allow teachers to arm themselves in their classrooms is, to say the least, a ridiculous and asinine proposal. Consider the teachers, however much they may be in the minority, who are mentally disturbed enough to molest children and/or assault their administrators. They are the very ones who never should be allowed to possess firearms in their classrooms.
As I have stated in previous letters, I taught in Clark County schools for 30 1/2 years, retiring in 1990. During my career I taught with and was acquainted with teachers whom I considered unstable. To put guns in their hands was unthinkable. For that matter, I am a proud member of the National Rifle Association, well trained in gun safety , and a lifelong owner of guns. I, myself, would not have wanted any gun in my classroom.
What if those guns were to fall into the hands of students or anyone deranged enough to use them?
No, no, no to guns in the classroom. This proposal cannot be passed off as protection from terrorists as Sen. Beers would have us believe.
