Letter: Veterans Affairs health care is top notch
Sunday, April 8, 2007 | 7:28 a.m.
I have medical care through the Veterans Affairs administration and my daughter has private insurance that I pay for through my work. A couple of weeks ago we both had appointments. I called the VA on a Tuesday and had an appointment the next Monday. I had called for my daughter's appointment three weeks before.
I went to my 10 a.m. appointment at the VA and was in the room with the doctor at 10 a.m. The doctor did a thorough exam during the 50 minutes I spent with her and she asked me to do some follow-up tests. She helped me arrange them and all down the line everything was accomplished very efficiently and on schedule.
As for my daughter: I took her to her 4:20 p.m. appointment, arriving at 4. We were finally called to see the doctor at 6:05 and he came into the examining room at 6:25. He did not have time to address the problem I was asking about but he did give my daughter a quick physical exam. He said a consulting specialist would call in about a week. Three weeks later I am still waiting for the consultation.
Please tell me which system is broken. The VA's? I think not. I love the VA's care givers. They are a caring, professional and organized group of people and their facilities are clean and maintained.
