Letter: Schools should have fewer guns, not more

Saturday, April 7, 2007 | 7:19 a.m.

The proposed legislation by Sen. Bob Beers, R-Las Vegas, to allow teachers to be armed is a bad idea.

Rather than introducing guns into the schools, we should be eliminating them. The use of metal detectors, as in other school districts, should be considered. Schools with multiple entrances could have fencing around the campus to make this practical.

Another problem with the senator's plan is that in a physical confrontation, the student may obtain possession of the teacher's gun, which has happened even with police officers who are trained for physical encounters. Also, an armed teacher may serve as a source of provocation for a disciplined student.

Last year there were a number of incidents of guns found in Las Vegas schools and there was at least one shooting. This situation demands that action be take n to eliminate guns in our schools, which is something students and parents have every right to expect.
