John Katsilometes on how the old gang at Coffee Pub hopes to re-create magic at new restaurant

Friday, April 6, 2007 | 7:16 a.m.

Patrons who yearn for the glory days of the Coffee Pub, which ended when owner Marty Brees sold the establishment on West Sahara Avenue a year and a half ago, will be happy to know that many of Brees' former employees are getting the band back together.

The old crew is about to launch a new restaurant, Beach Cafe, at 7750 S. Jones Blvd. ( at Robindale Road). Much of the staff who worked for Brees, who now owns the Juice Bars housed in Las Vegas Athletic Clubs, is reuniting for the new venture under longtime Coffee Pub manager Robyn Bradley and her husband, Scott.

The Bradleys have partnered with her brother, Kevin Aivaz . Another Coffee Pub mainstay, Lisa Hayes, is the manager of the new place, which will open from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily and will offer full breakfast and lunch menus and feature (of course) a beach atmosphere.

The Coffee Pub is still open, under new ownership, but lacks the top-notch service that once made it a local favorite. Robyn Bradley says her staff is committed to the type of service that made the original Coffee Pub a power-lunch haven for more than 20 years. "It was the people, more than the food, that made the Coffee Pub a success," she said by phone this week. The tentative opening date for Beach Cafe is April 16.

The other day I referred to a spat between comics Bobby "The Pit Bull" Slayton and Carrot Top (real name: Scott Thompson), and I have an update: No more spat. About four years ago Slayton referred to the Topper's act as "abominable," a term that rankled the veteran prop comic, but the two are back on friendly terms. In an e-mail this week (and let it be known that the Pit Bull just loves! The exclamation marks! Which I have deleted!), Slayton said: "Carrot Top did a very funny video, along with Lewis Black, Jon Lovitz and Rita Rudner, to open my show, so I take back EVERYTHING I said. Along with the other comics I just mentioned, he's now one of my favorites. There are too many people I really do hate." Slayton begins a run at the Night Owl Showroom at Hooters on April 21, and Carrot Top is still at the Luxor, being something other than abominable ...

Iceberg Slick, a one-time staple of the downtown Arts District, will host a demonstration of legal graffiti art on Sunday at the Rockhouse Bar & Nightclub at the Imperial Palace. Reformed tagger-turned-artist Ruckus One demonstrates his flavor of graffiti art between 5 and 9 p.m. Serving as the artist's canvas will be the wall near the bar at the club's entrance. That wall has become a permanent display piece for such artwork ...

Just plane grateful: Ken Collins, a former patient at the Nevada Cancer Institute, wants to thank the staff for his care at its Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology centers. A member of SkyTypers Inc., which draws messages in the sky with aircraft, Collins plans to scrawl "NVCI Is No. 1" in smoke during Saturday's Vegas Grand Prix qualifying action ...

Former KVBC Channel 3 assignment editor Robert Martinez is back in local TV at KLAS Channel 8. Martinez left Channel 3 in August for a whirl in PR at Preferred Public Relations before returning to his TV news roots ...

It has been reported here and elsewhere (including there) that Paula Abdul holds some sort of official role at the Silverton. Not so. The carefree "American Idol" judge has no official position, consultingwise or otherwise, at the Silverton. She is just a friend of President Craig Cavileer ...

Before you think "Star Trek," think again: Friend in the field spots TREK ON on a dark blue Ford Explorer. The rig was carrying a Trek bike in the back.
