Letter: Gonzales, Bush are embarrassments
Tuesday, April 3, 2007 | 7:13 a.m.
Alberto Gonzales is just the latest example of another Bush crony being appointed to a position for which he had few, if any, qualifications.
I would suggest that in the president's eyes Gonzales deserved to be elevated to the status of the highest law enforcement officer in the country for his 1996 success in having then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush excused from jury duty. This prevented Bush from having to fill out a questionnaire that would have required the disclosure of his 1976 arrest in Maine for misdemeanor drunken driving. Bush had pleaded guilty to that offense.
Gonzales' contribution to justice in America has been zero, culminating in the improper, and possibly criminal, process that resulted in the removal of several U.S. attorneys who did not succumb to White House pressure to influence prosecutions.
Gonzales denied any involvement in the process that led to the dismissals. Now we know through the sworn testimony of his former chief of staff, his feeble explanation was untrue. So much for truth and justice!
The Bush administration is an embarrassment.
