Letter: Don’t forget, people are the government

Monday, April 2, 2007 | 7:10 a.m.

I want to respond to Fred Bilello's March 28 letter, "Government should stay out of our lives":

Mr. Bilello states that if people choose to not wear seat belts and kill themselves, that's their right. That would be fine if they did die, but many don't. Many people don't die.

They become vegetables - living without functioning. They become wards of the state. Then my tax dollars are used to keep them alive. My insurance rates go up because they don't have any.

If Mr. Bilello can ensure me that I won't be impacted by other people's stupid decisions, then fine, don't wear a seat belt. One last thought: He says government should stay out of our lives. We are the government. People are the government. We make the laws on how this country is run. People like Mr. Bilello seem to forget that.
