Paws for Peace

Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006 | 7:27 a.m.

About 300 cats and dogs rescued from the rubble of the war in Lebanon landed shortly after midnight Tuesday at McCarran International Airport where they were loaded onto trucks that took them to an animal shelter in Utah.

The cargo flight made stops in Manchester, England, and New York before landing in Las Vegas.

The operation was handled by Best Friends Animal Society, which has built a canyon sanctuary five miles north of Kanab, Utah, to care for the animals while they await adoption.

The sanctuary includes yurtlike tents filled with cages and medical equipment for animals that have sustained injuries.

Members of Lebanon's only humane society, Beirut for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, also were involved in the effort, called Paws for Peace. Most of the program's cost, in excess of $250,000, came from donations.
