Letter: Talk radio is dictated by marketplace

Thursday, Sept. 28, 2006 | 7:28 a.m.

Regarding the headline that the Sun placed on Douglas Rusta's Sept. 26 letter, "Right monopolizes local talk radio": The headline fails to reflect the true nature of the situation.

Talk radio takes place in a free-market situation. We have numerous conservatively oriented talk shows because the marketplace supports them. They attract an audience (and paying advertisers) in numbers great enough to give the station a profit.

Air America Radio would be in Las Vegas if a radio station thought it would be a profitable venture to add them. Rather recently, there were reports that Air America was on the verge of bankruptcy, and one of their hopes for survival was an infusion of cash from someone like George Soros.

If I owned a radio station, I wouldn't be in a hurry to jump on such an operation. Any "monopolizing" of the local market is a figment of someone's imagination.
