Letter: President’s policies help spread terrorism
Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2006 | 7:26 a.m.
If I had a buck for every time I heard President Bush or any of his Republican supporters say, "We have not had a terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11," I could retire.
It's almost as if we were having attacks on a daily basis before 9/11/01, when in fact the only newsworthy attack on U.S. soil by terrorists before 9/11/01 was the attack on the World Trade Center a number of years prior to that horrific September morning.
Other than two attacks, we have been safe from terrorist attacks in our country. In other words we have had a total of two attacks, since our country's beginning, that have been attributed to foreign terrorists.
Because of what President Bush's policies have done since 9/11, we should be very concerned about the possibilities of future attacks.
The New York Times and Washington Post just released some excerpts from an intelligence report that summarized the opinion of 16 U.S. spy agencies that found that the Iraq war has invigorated Islamic radicalism and worsened the global terrorist threat. In other words, our policies since 9/11 have helped greatly in the recruitment of terrorists rather than the elimination of them.
But if one would ask President Bush's response to this report, he no doubt would say, "We must stay the course." It is a shame the American public is so gullible to the "spin" that politicians put on disastrous failures.
