Letter: GOP morphs Iran into Iraq for elections
Monday, Sept. 25, 2006 | 7:16 a.m.
With a mid-term election about a month away, the Republican fear-and-war machine is gearing up because it's all they have to sell.
Iran is the next bad guy to keep us from changing horses in November. Not only is George Bush ranting about Iran's nuclear program, but a congressional committee on intelligence has said it has evidence that Iran is making nuclear weapons with the connivance of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The IAEA says Iran is not making weapons-grade material and does not have the capability to do so. As you may recall, it was the IAEA that said Saddam had no active nuclear weapons program before that invasion.
Meanwhile, Venezuela's president, Hugo Chavez, visited a Harlem church in New York last Thursday. He promised to more than double the amount of discounted heating oil he is providing for poor Americans. I know that Chavez is widely portrayed in the media as a buffoon, and his oil deal is certainly a propaganda move. Yet, I wish George Bush would think of something like that.
