Hal Rothman explains how the Average Joe can have it all in Vegas
Las Vegas has been instrumental in creating a world where experience is currency and entertainment has replaced culture. We have benefited from it immensely, but in the process have done some violence to older values. The culture of me, me, me, now, now, now, the self-indulgent universe we inhabit, is in no small part our contribution to American society.
New twist in globalization
The New Yorker once ran a cartoon by Peter Steiner of two dogs, with one sitting at a computer keyboard saying to the other, "On the Internet, nobody knows you're a dog."
Economy remains fertile battleground in elections
In Minnesota, Amy Klobuchar looks into the camera and declares: "These days, no matter how hard you work, the price of gas, college and health care is getting out of reach."
Editorial: Commissioner on hot seat
The developer appears from time to time before the County Commission. In fact, less than six months before Boggs McDonald accepted the loan, she helped the developer win a zoning change from the commission. And after she had accepted the loan, she voted affirmatively on another matter affecting the developer.
Letter: GOP can't take credit for lower gas prices
When the prices per gallon exceeded $3, the Republicans said that they and Bush had no control over gasoline prices. Put this in your memory bank.
Letter: List of fallen troops sad but appreciated
I am vehemently opposed to this war, how we were hoodwinked into it, how it is being handled, what it has cost us in the lives lost and those injured, and the lack of support for those who have been ordered to serve in it and whose lives are changed forever as a result of that service, not to mention the cost in dollars and our diminished standing in the eyes of the rest of the world.
Letter: Clinton deserving of opponents' respect
Now I can't remember Democrats making personal attacks against Nancy Reagan, Barbara Bush or Laura Bush, but some Republicans not only think they can but also must describe Sen. Clinton in the most foul and demeaning way, such as calling her a witch and even worse.
Letter: 'War on terrorism' doomed by nature to fail
Historically, our country has declared war on many things that we have not been able to beat. We declared war on drugs, crime, poverty and illiteracy. However, all those problems are still part of daily life. America's war on drugs, however, has been a 30-year war!
Editorial: Shut up and drive
Take cell phones, for example. In barely 10 years they have become such a standard personal accessory that many people can hardly fathom how they ever got along without them. True, the ability to make or take a phone call no matter where one happens to be has helped vast numbers of Americans increase their mobility, personal freedom and safety.

Seniors find additional school support taxing
The conversation swirled around the meeting room at the Las Vegas Senior Center - the crime these days and more discounts for seniors at the buffets and would you believe these disrespectful kids? But one senior citizen had a gripe on which almost everyone could agree: "Seniors are overtaxed," said JoAnn Titus.
Brian Greenspun on Clinton Global Initiative and Rosh Hashanah melding perfectly
Jews around the world celebrated the beginning of the new year, 5767, this past weekend, beginning at sundown on Friday. The CGI ended Friday afternoon, in just enough time for those who celebrated the new year to get to their homes and synagogues. The major difference, of course, between the Clinton initiative and the Jewish holiday is that the former president's most impressive gathering was global, the people who attended represented every race, creed, color, religion, social status, financial position, political persuasion and any other differentiation that you can imagine. Those celebrating Rosh Hashanah were, I suspect, almost all Jewish.
