Letter: Cell phone ban should include all drivers
Friday, Sept. 22, 2006 | 7:31 a.m.
Regarding the Las Vegas Sun's Sept. 21 article by Cy Ryan and Emily Richmond about teen cell phone use while driving:
The article mentioned a bill requested by Assemblyman Mark Manendo prohibiting minors from using hand-held cell phones while driving. But if cell phone use is a danger on our roads, then it is a safety issue for all drivers, not just teens.
If a seat belt law is good, then banning cell phones may be even better.
Seat belts are for one's own personal safety, but cell phone use could affect other drivers' safety as well, making a cell phone ban a more responsible action if safety is the overriding issue.
So, if the Nevada Legislature believes that seat belt laws are good, then it must also enact a law banning cell phone use for all drivers in order to be consistent for safety reasons.
And the ban should also include any talking on cell phones, even if it is hands-free. It is the talking itself and the resultant lack of concentration that causes accidents, not the holding of the phone.
