Letter: Some suggestions for safer roads

Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006 | 7:22 a.m.

As Las Vegas and its environs continue to grow, most of its citizens are in desperate need of relief from the dangerous traffic conditions that put our lives at risk every single day. A few of what I believe to be reasonable suggestions:

1. Most major cities use the 55 mph limit on their highways within city limits. Having some drivers hurtle their way on our highways at 75-85 mph is not acceptable.

2. As is done in many cities, designate one lane for cars and trucks that carry two or more passengers. This provides incentives for carpooling and facilitates the flow of traffic. Considering the cost of fuel these days, it would be welcome to our commuters to have this opportunity.

3. Increase the use of unmarked cars to patrol our roads and get dangerous drivers back into classes teaching them the necessity of observing the basic rules of safe driving.

4. Nothing more has to be said about DUI. We have experienced enough fatalities. Heavy fines and prison time will save lives.

5. The use of cell phones while a vehicle is in motion should not be tolerated. These are accidents waiting to happen. Some states have adopted this already - why not us?

6. Increase the driving age to 17, and only if accompanied by a responsible, licensed driver. With a clean record, a full license would be awarded at the age of 18. Age 16 is too young to assume full responsibility.

These suggestions might appear draconian, unpopular or too expensive, but are most necessary. We seem to be able to appropriate state aid or federal funds for many projects which are far less important.
