Letter: Ensign’s blind support of Bush

Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2006 | 7:21 a.m.

Once again Sen. John Ensign is in lock-step with the now morally challenged President Bush regarding the issue of torturing enemy combatants. Although never having served in the military, Sen. Ensign ignores the opinions of distinguished military men who vehemently disagree with President Bush on the torture issue, including Colin Powell, a four-star general and decorated combat veteran; Sen. Lindsey Graham, a former military lawyer who served for over six years as an Air Force trial lawyer; and Sen. John Warner, who volunteered and served in both World War II and Korea.

How can Sen. Ensign disregard the anti-torture position of Sen. John McCain, who endured torture himself as a prisoner of war for five and a half years during the Vietnam War? President Bush warns that these interrogation methods have yielded valuable information that have prevented terrorist attacks. Where's the evidence of those failed attacks? Is he referring to those seven homeless guys in Florida who thought they could get some new boots from al-Qaida by saying they would blow up the Sears Tower?

There have been few, if any, positives to date in the Bush administration. Will Sen. Ensign ever wake up and realize that his blind support of the president's failed initiatives is causing worldwide disrespect and disdain toward America?
