Letter: Sacrifice, support needed in wartime
Monday, Sept. 11, 2006 | 7:29 a.m.
This letter is not an indictment of the Iraq war, but it is meant to ensure that Congress follows a set of rules when it gives carte blanche to any president to declare war.
No war should be declared unless Congress officially declares it. There should be no tax cuts during war because war requires sacrifice.
The draft should be instituted during wartime, without educational or employment deferments in order to extend the honor of serving America.
Why?
So that Americans understand, back our government and have a clear understanding that we all must serve; war requires sacrifices.
This policy would eliminate the finger-pointing and the endless political rhetoric that creates dissension, especially during elections.
Support our troops. Support veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan when they enter our homeless and unemployed population. Support our homeless veterans.
