Letter: Stuckey school would be good for Las Vegas

In regard to Brian Greenspun's Sept. 3 Where I Stand column, many persons agree that the Clark County School District should have a school named for Evelyn Stuckey, the Las Vegas High School teacher and school sponsor of the famous Rhythmettes drill team.

As Mr. Greenspun stated, Rhythmettes were held in high esteem. Mrs. Stuckey demanded they be role models for the school. These girls were respected for their drill team contributions and, in return, were expected to display exceptional academic traits. Rhythmettes were the best!

How timely this topic is! On Saturday, Sept. 23, Nevada Women's History Project-Southern Region is honoring the Rhythmettes. President Jane Ellsworth Olive, a Las Vegas High School graduate, is introducing the program, "Reflections of the Rhythmettes." Seven original Rhythmettes are to speak. The video of the Ed Sullivan show's segment of the Rhythmettes performing is to be shown.

What a wonderful time for these ladies as well as for all other interested parties to get on the bandwagon and add support for the naming of a Clark County school after Evelyn Stuckey, teacher and mentor to Las Vegas High School's Rhythmettes!
