His team finished the season 10 games under .500 and 24 games out of first place in its division, but Las Vegas 51s manager Jerry Royster couldn't have been happier.
Oh, he would have liked for his team to have won more games than it did, but in the grand scheme of minor league baseball, Royster did precisely what he was hired to do: get players ready to contribute for the parent Los Angeles Dodgers.
Since the 51s' Opening Day back in April, every position player who started the season in Las Vegas was promoted to the major leagues. So were a handful of pitchers. And many of those former 51s are making valuable contributions to the National League West-leading Dodgers.
"Organizationally speaking, we could not have had a more successful year," Royster said. "It's just unfortunate that the (fans) here didn't get a chance to reap it, but they were forewarned - (I said) 'They won't be here long; come out and see them because they won't be here long.' "
