Letter: Texas hurricane is nation’s worst disaster

Sunday, Sept. 3, 2006 | 7:17 a.m.

Katrina was a horrible disaster. New Orleans was a huge national landmark of our diverse culture.

In gross land devastation, which of course includes Mississippi, it may have been the worse hurricane. Andrew very well was probably more intense in wind power.

Both were serious and were costly financially. But you cannot compare today's costs with those of a century ago.

From a sheer standpoint of death, the hurricane that struck Galveston, Texas, in September 1900 was by far worse than any in our recorded history. Of the city's 37,000 population, 8,000 died. This was the worst disaster.
