Letter: President has gotten us in over our heads

In response to Fred Waldman's Aug. 31 letter, "Bush deserves credit for success he's had," many feel that he is right. But those feelings must also be tempered with the reality of what President Bush has done to the next couple of generations of Americans with his "war on terror."

The real action being conducted between warring religious groups in the Middle East has only been inflamed by the presence of our troops in Iraq. Their infighting has been going on for centuries, and Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld's attempts to instill peace and democracy in Iraq by eliminating Saddam have evolved into smoke dreams, maybe even nightmares.

Radical Muslims openly want Spain, and France is next. Now they want to "kill all infidels." That's us ...

Many Americans agree that more terrorist attacks have been thwarted on our soil, but the real picture at home looks like this: Thousands of our troops are dead, and tens of thousands are injured. The enormous national debt, hundreds of billions, the largest in history, must be paid back by our children and their offspring.

We are told that "we will stay the course," but after three years, what course? We have no plan to win!

And, although Homeland Security and TSA are finally starting to realize that we must apply profiling and behavioral analysis to look for people instead of nail clippers, we are on high alert because the terrorists may attack us again, to tell us to get our nose out of their business in the Middle East.

When Mr. Rumsfeld recently attacked the press and human rights groups in Salt Lake City by saying that their attitude was indicative of "moral and intellectual confusion about who or what is right or wrong" about Iraq, many felt that he inadvertently described himself and Mr. Bush to a "T"!

Many Americans rightfully realize that we are now at war, and feel that if we continue "the course" we will have defeated the enemy ... and the enemy is us.
